Welcome to Hickory Flat Pottery! I am Cindy Angliss and I have been a potter
for about 30 years. This is a working studio, and I am very happy
to be here. This old house is 112 years old, and I love it.
It has a history and personality all its own, as do I, and chances are
if you come back again and again you will find out about both.
A little about me... I have a B.A. in Child Psychology, and a M. Ed. in
Behavior Disorders. I became entranced with clay when I took a hand
building course at Callenwolde Art Center while teaching in Atlanta. I
found myself a mentor who taught me more of the basics of hand building
and slab work. I then had a wheel built, began turning on the wheel,
and started to do shows and sell to galleries. After a few years
I stopped teaching to become a full time potter. I am mostly self-taught.
My work reflects an oriental painterly feeling as I took Chinese and Japanese
watercolor courses. I try to emphasize the cohesion of beauty and
utility in each piece. My pots are oven, dishwasher, and microwave
safe and meant to be used!! I specialize in decorative, functional
stoneware, and I fire in a 60 cubic foot downdraft gas kiln. My normal
routine is to make pots for 2 weeks, glaze and load the kiln the third
week and fire. As a result of the process it takes 3 weeks to produce
a pot, start to finish. I am having fun with copper red glazes now.
This is a very challenging glaze, one that potters either love or hate.
It can be very frustrating, but rewarding when it comes out well.

For many years I sold to shops and galleries in Atlanta, north Georgia
and North Carolina. In the back of my mind I always knew that I wanted
my own gallery, and wanted it to be in the mountains of north Georgia.
In 1994 I bought this old house, fixed it up, fixed it up some more, moved
my studio and have been here full time for 5 years now. I am very
happy to be here and hope you enjoy these mountains as much as I do.
Thank you for visiting and
please come again. Have a great day!! For more

or call. I welcome visitors to my studio. Click
